Complete drawing-based manufacturing
A controlled drawing is the strongest starting point when it defines geometry, material, tolerances, datums, finish and acceptance requirements. Add the matching 3D model when it improves interpretation of complex geometry.
Confirm the drawing revision before quotation and again before production. If an existing part differs from the drawing, identify whether the drawing or the sample represents the intended design.
Model plus critical dimensions
A 3D model can define nominal shape while a short controlled document identifies the characteristics that matter most. At minimum, define material, critical dimensions, general tolerance, threads, finish and any mating interfaces that cannot be accepted from nominal geometry alone.
Physical-sample review
A sample can reveal overall form, interfaces, assembly relationships and manufacturing clues that are unavailable in photographs. It can also support measurement and material-identification planning. However, a sample does not automatically reveal original tolerances, material condition, heat treatment or design intent.
- Identify which surfaces mate, seal, locate or move
- Explain the part’s function and operating environment
- Provide mating parts or interface dimensions when available
- State which features may be modified and which must remain unchanged
Photographs and measured dimensions
Photographs from multiple angles, a scale reference and a small set of measured dimensions can support an initial feasibility discussion. Include close views of interfaces, holes, threads, damaged areas and identification markings.
This information is normally preliminary. It may not be sufficient to establish hidden geometry, datum relationships, material condition or acceptance limits.
Account for worn or damaged samples
Wear, deformation, corrosion, repair work and accumulated assembly clearance can cause a sample to differ from its original design. Copying every measured condition may reproduce the damage rather than the intended function.
Compare the sample with mating components, unworn reference surfaces, maintenance information and functional requirements. Where design intent remains uncertain, document assumptions and resolve them before the part becomes a repeat-order reference.
Use first-article validation before repeat production
For a reconstructed or replacement part, validate the first article against agreed dimensions, material, finish and functional interfaces before releasing a repeat batch. Record the approved drawing or model revision and any accepted deviations.
A physical sample alone does not guarantee exact replication. The repeat-production basis should be the approved technical definition and validation result, not an uncontrolled sample.
